Overview

Intended purpose

Overview — Amazon Translate is a cloud-based machine-translation service. This record covers a proof of concept testing whether it can reliably and accurately translate Social Security Scotland letters and notifications.

How it is used — The proof of concept explores an alternative to the current process for translating client letters, which is manual, costly and time-consuming, requires significant operational effort and agency spend, and can mean clients on a non-English journey do not receive information on time. Amazon Translate can help improve accessibility and service reach for multilingual communities.

Scope and limitations — It is not a substitute for human translation in sensitive or nuanced contexts, but is used to accelerate translation tasks, reduce costs and support broader engagement across language barriers.
